The Ultimate Self-Maintenance: Take a Bath 🛀

English

Hi, it’s Mac here!

It’s been getting colder lately, and honestly, going out feels like a chore 😂

Whenever I feel that way, I force myself to go to a nearby onsen to reset both my body and mind.

To be honest, I almost always feel lazy before going.

But after soaking in the bath, I always think:

“I’m really glad I came.”

When I’m tired or mentally foggy, soaking in hot water doesn’t just relax my body —

it clears my head too.

Today, I want to share why taking a bath (at home or at an onsen) is such a powerful way to recover both physically and mentally.

1. Water Pressure and Buoyancy Flush Out Fatigue

When you soak in a bathtub, gentle water pressure is applied to your whole body.

This helps push out lactic acid, waste products, and swelling — especially from your legs and calves.

As circulation improves, these waste products are more easily eliminated from the body.

At the same time, buoyancy reduces the load on your body,

putting you in a near weightless state.

This combination of water pressure + buoyancy plays a huge role in restoring healthy blood flow.

A shower alone doesn’t provide this effect,

which can sometimes lead to poor circulation over time.

👉 For real recovery, a full-body soak is more effective than a shallow bath.

2. Raising Body Temperature Boosts Circulation and Immunity

Soaking in hot water raises your core body temperature,

which activates blood flow throughout the body.

If your body temperature stays low for long periods,

you’re more likely to experience cold sensitivity, poor circulation, and general fatigue.

A slightly hot bath creates this positive chain reaction:

Body temperature rises

→ Blood vessels activate

→ White blood cells work better

→ Immunity improves

Saunas and stone baths also raise body temperature,

but they don’t provide water pressure.

👉 A full-body bath offers the strongest recovery effect because it combines heat and water pressure.

3. Relaxed Muscles, Calmer Nervous System

Buoyancy helps release tension in your muscles and joints,

while also calming your autonomic nervous system.

This leads to:

  • Faster recovery from fatigue
  • Better sleep quality
  • Improved mental balance

That refreshed feeling after a bath?

👉 It means your mind is recovering too.

4. Flush Fatigue Before Going to Bed

If you go to bed while still fatigued,

waste products trapped in your legs can move back toward vital organs like the brain and heart.

This can cause:

  • Shallow sleep
  • Waking up still tired
  • General discomfort

👉 Taking a bath before bed helps flush fatigue out before you sleep.

Final Thoughts: Bathing Is the Strongest Self-Care

A bath isn’t just a place to get clean —

it’s a place to restore both body and mind.

Many of the benefits simply can’t be replaced by a quick shower.

Bathing helps you:

👉 Release fatigue

👉 Prevent illness

👉 Reset your mental state

It’s one of the most effective forms of self-maintenance.

If you feel tired easily or get cold often,

skip the shower and take a deep, full-body soak instead.

Bathtubs may not be common in many countries,

but if you have access to an onsen, I highly recommend giving it a try!
