How to Reset Your Mood When You’re Feeling Down|Just Get Outside 🚶‍➡️

English

Hi, it’s Mac here.

Today, I want to share my personal method for lifting my mood on days off. It’s more of a mindset thing than minimalism, haha.

Even when you think, “Yes, it’s my day off!” it can be hard to actually get out if you have no plans or if it’s just too hot outside. A lot of people end up mindlessly scrolling on YouTube or binge-watching Amazon Prime or Netflix.

And then, before you know it, the day is over and you’re left thinking, “I didn’t do anything today…”—and your mood drops.

Don’t get me wrong, staying in and watching dramas, anime, or movies is fine sometimes. But for me, if I don’t step outside at all on my day off, I just feel low for some reason.

I’ve noticed something important when I’m in this state:

When your mood is low, that’s exactly the time you should get outside!

Stepping Outside Changes the Air

Honestly, the hardest part is just opening the front door. I totally get the feeling of wanting to push it off: “Eh, maybe later…”

You get ready, change clothes, psych yourself up… but then sometimes you just give up, slip back into your comfy clothes, and flop on the couch 😂

But once you actually step outside, something shifts. Just walking around can slowly lift your mood.

My Go-To Reset Routine

Here’s an example of how I spent a recent day off:

  • Got a haircut ✂️
Seeing a lighter, fresher version of myself is a mood booster on its own. Freshly washed hair just feels amazing.
  • Sweated it out in the sauna ♨️
Feeling the stress and toxins leave your body, and that sharp shock of the cold bath—it’s like my brain fog gets washed away too.
  • Hit up a cheap bar after the bath 🍺
Lately, I’ve been hopping between cheap bars called SENBERO in Japan, and loving the Hoppy!(similar to beer). The little buzz really refreshes your mood.

What I realized is that doing nothing all day is the biggest mood killer. That’s why it’s so important to step outside and take even small actions. You don’t need to go far—just a local bathhouse(Is this a culture unique to Japan?) or bar works. In fact, doing small, easy things nearby makes it easier to turn into a habit.

Wrap-Up

When my mood is low, my go-to reset is simple:

Step outside.

Get a haircut, hit the sauna, grab a drink.

Each little action is small, but together they reliably shift my mood.

When you’re feeling stuck, take that first step outside. That small action can turn a regular day off into something a little special.

If you have a routine that lifts up your mood, please share it!
