Hi, I’m Mac.
Today, I want to share three personal rules I always follow when shopping.
When practicing minimalism, it’s not just about reducing stuff, but more about not adding unnecessary things in the first place.
1. Take a Step Back Before Buying
The moment you see something and think, “Oh, this is nice!” your excitement is usually at its peak.
But if you buy it right then and there, you might come home and wonder, “Why did I buy this?”
So my rule is: even if I find something I want, I don’t buy it immediately.
I take it home mentally, think about it calmly, and only if I still want it later do I go back to buy it.
Surprisingly, more than half of the time, that initial desire cools down by the next day.
Having that cool-down period is really important.
2. Think If You Can Substitute with Something Else
I don’t own scissors.
But it’s not inconvenient—
I cut paper, bags, and even cardboard with my kitchen knife!
Before buying anything, I ask myself, “Can I use something else I already have instead?”
Often, the answer is yes.
Once you get into this habit, your stuff doesn’t pile up and your spending goes down.
Plus, your home feels more spacious.
3. Buy Without Hesitation What You Need for Your Health
While cutting down on wasteful spending, I don’t scrimp on things related to my health.
Sunscreen, protein powder, good-quality ingredients—these always go straight into my shopping basket.
If your health suffers, enjoying life becomes much harder.
If spending is divided into “investment” and “consumption,” health is definitely an investment.
Final Thoughts
Being a minimalist doesn’t mean never buying anything.
It’s about drawing your own line between what’s worth buying and what’s not.
- Take a cool-down period before buying
- Think about substitutes
- Don’t hesitate on health essentials!
Following these three simple rules makes both your wallet and your home feel lighter.
And as a result, your mind feels lighter too.
